A call for peace and prayer

Martin Luther University College appeals to all parties in Israel and Palestinian territories to de-escalate and cease the violence causing injuries to, and the deaths of, so many innocent people in their communities.

Images of people suffering as a result of armed conflict are always heart-wrenching to see. But the level of carnage and destruction taking place in Jerusalem, Gaza and surrounding areas this week truly distresses us. We add our voice to those of our synodical and national bishops; the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land; and the Lutheran World Federation who are also calling for the end to the violence and a just peace for all.

During Luther’s Holy Land study tours, many of us have worked with and befriended people in the region and have grown to appreciate the complexities of their community life. For many of us, memories of warm encounters remind us that the violence driving their people further apart is not distant.

We also call on all people of faith to join us in praying for Israelis and Palestinians — Jews, Muslims, Christians and others.
