Martin Luther University College invites you to join an online event exploring the 16th-century Reformer’s troubled relationship with Islam.

Luther Legacy: Luther and Islam takes place online 6:30 - 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15, 2022.

The event is the second instalment in a series on Martin Luther’s legacy, said Rev. Dr. Kristine Lund, the school’s principal-dean.

“As a Lutheran institution it is incumbent on us to not shy away from our namesake’s legacy,” Lund said. “Although Luther's thoughts and writing brought about a monumental paradigm shift that continues to impact the world in many positive ways today, we must resist the temptation to idolize such influential figures whether they live today or lived five centuries ago.”

The school’s first Luther Legacy event, which focused on Luther and antisemitism, was held in January 2020.

Speakers for Luther and Islam include:

  • Dr. Sayed Hassan Akhlaq, Marymount and Coppin State universities; Northern Virginia Community College
  • The Rev. Dr. David D. Grafton, Professor of Islamic Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations, Hartford International University

Rev. Dr. Allen Jorgenson, the school’s assistant dean and professor of systematic theology, and Dr. Mary Philip (a.k.a. Joy), the school’s assistant principal and associate professor of Lutheran global theology and mission, are co-organizers of the event.

“The speakers were chosen for their extensive knowledge of Luther’s writing in relation to Islam, and how his stance continues to affect contemporary Christian-Muslim relations,” said Philip.
