Art Hive
Luther’s Art Hive is a free drop-in open studio focused on wellness and the arts.
It is a safe, inclusive, and diverse community space where students can build relationships with others through art-making – the open studio space with no set agenda helps students connect with their inner artists, which supports creative thinking, expanded awareness, and playfulness.
Event Details
Last Wednesday of the month from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Keffer Chapel. Fall 2025 sessions will start on Sept. 25.
- No registration needed. Just show up.
- Free art supplies. Materials for your project are provided at no cost to you.
- Open studio format. Just de-stress, explore, and have fun!

Ensuring a Positive and Inclusive Environment For All
To ensure a positive and inclusive environment for all, we commit to the following principles:
We embrace diversity in all its forms, and we welcome individuals of varying backgrounds, abilities, experiences, and skill levels. We believe that art is a universal language that transcends boundaries. No previous experience is required, and all art supplies will be provided at no cost.
We respect each other’s artistic choices, opinions, and perspectives. We create a non-judgmental space where everyone is valued and heard. No participant is ever required to answer any question or participate in any activity that makes them uncomfortable. Bullying or micro-aggression of any kind will not be tolerated, nor will disparaging remarks about race, religion, culture, sexual orientation, gender, identity, disability, body type, or other facets of identity.
We empower each member to explore their creative potential and express themselves freely through art. We celebrate the unique talents and strengths that each individual brings to the group.
We offer support and encouragement to one another, fostering a sense of belonging and well-being. We recognize that art can be a source of healing and personal growth. We also acknowledge that there are other systemic issues which art-making alone cannot address, and do our best to direct folks towards supportive community resources, including services related to mental health, housing, food, or any other aspect of well-being. You can access these resources through the Martin Luther University College Art Hive Resources and Community Support Directory by scanning the provided QR code, referring to the physical version in the Community Resources binder at the Chapel, or reaching out to our group facilitators directly.
Art-making can be healing, cathartic, and emotional at times. While this is not specifically an Art Therapy space, we seek to prioritize the emotional well-being of our participants and acknowledge the complex challenges that folks might be facing in their personal lives. If at any point during our art-making sessions, you or someone else experiences distress, please do not hesitate to reach out for support. Our facilitators and fellow hosts are here to help, and point you toward further community mental health resources.
We maintain the confidentiality of personal stories shared within the group. Trust is essential for open expression. Do not take photos or share images of others or their artwork without their explicit consent.
We respect personal workspaces and the boundaries set by fellow participants. Do not touch others’ artwork, materials, or personal belongings without permission.
We encourage an atmosphere of curiosity and openness towards using art as a vehicle for self-expression and growth. We firmly discourage any form of judgment towards others’ artistic creations. Even positive comments on someone’s art-making process may not be welcomed by all, so ask before assessing or commenting on fellow participants work. Our commitment is to maintain an open, safe, and non-judgmental space where everyone can freely learn from one another.
We are committed to environmentally sustainable practices in our art making whenever possible, to minimize our ecological footprint and any type of waste. We also encourage members who are able to consider donating spare or unused/used art materials to our shared supply. Your contributions help sustain our creative community and ensure that everyone has access to the resources they need for artistic expression.
We encourage members to arrive a little early if you can and help with the set-up of art supplies and materials. After completing your art projects, we kindly request that each member participates in the clean-up process if your time allows. This includes putting away art supplies, disposing of any waste responsibly, and leaving our space as clean and welcoming as we found it. Setting up and cleaning up together fosters a sense of shared responsibility as a community.
Kindly demonstrate consideration when utilizing our shared art supplies and materials. It is essential that we all take responsibility for maintaining the quality and accessibility of these communal resources. After using any shared materials, please ensure that they are cleaned, organized, and stored properly. This thoughtful approach not only contributes to the overall functionality of our Art Hive but also ensures that these resources remain available and in good condition for everyone’s creative endeavors.
In the event of conflicts or disagreements, we prioritize open and respectful communication. We encourage members to engage in constructive dialogue to resolve issues, respecting each other’s perspectives and feelings. If needed, our facilitators are available to assist in finding fair and amicable solutions. Confidentiality and privacy are upheld, ensuring that conflicts are addressed with care and empathy, fostering a harmonious and supportive environment for all.
