Sherry Coman
Associate Professional Faculty; Director, Centre for Spirituality and Media
I am the founding director of Luther's Centre for Spirituality and Media. I teach courses in film, media and spirituality, and in gender justice. I am an ordained deacon in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, which came after a career in film edicuation. I have been a writer, educator and story editor with more than 30 years experience in theatre and film. I continue to work as a development consultant with writers and artists in film, fiction and digital media. I like to bring these artists into the classroom of the courses I teach at Luther.
In the mid-2000s, I went back to school to study theology. In 2008, I earned a Master of Theological Studies at Waterloo Lutheran Seminary (now Martin Luther University College) with a focus on New Testament. In 2012, I completed a Masters of Theology in the Hebrew Bible from Toronto School of Theology in Toronto, with a special focus on the Dead Sea Scrolls. I also have a third Masters degree in Screenwriting, from the American Film Institute Centre for Advanced Film Studies (1986).
I write and curate spiritual devotionals for the online ministry Lutherans Connect, with ongoing projects throughout the year. In 2022, Lutherans Connect came under the auspices of the Centre for Spirituality and Media. Look for news of events at the Centre in the summer of 2023!

My research interests include film and theology; digital media and visual culture and theology; and film production theory. I'm the founding director of the Centre for Spirituality and Media, a collaboration between Luther and the Eastern Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada. The centre launched in May 2021.
My research interests as a biblical scholar were in the area of the non-biblical texts of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
