Right along the side of campus, facing Albert St. is Luther’s Food Justice Garden. It’s a vibrant space filled with raised beds for growing vegetables, fruits and flowers for pollination. We even have a small greenhouse to extend our growing season into some of the colder months!
The Food Justice garden is a partnership between Luther's Centre for Earth Consciousness and Gender Justice and LSPIRG to give students an opportunity to learn about growing sustainably. The food grown here is distributed in our Food Distro program right on campus to help combat food insecurity, with fresh produce and other essentials. The Garden is also funded by the WLU Sustainability Office and Dr. Mary Joy Philip's sabbatical on food security.
Our Garden Coordinator, Aaron, runs weekly sessions at our Food Justice Garden to help you gain skills for growing food. Sessions are at 5:30 p.m. every Thursday at Luther, unless otherwise noted.
Location: Luther, corner of Seagram St. and Albert St. along the building, facing Albert St.
Northdale Garden location: 66 Hickory St., head behind the WLU building and go up the stairs. If you would like to head over to Northdale together, you can meet at the garden at Luther at 5:15pm and you can head over with Aaron.
Our events are rain or shine, dress for the weather but stay tuned on updates as for thunderstorms or extreme heat we may move our session indoors.
For a more in-depth learning experience and opportunity to contribute to the garden, you can volunteer with us! You’ll also get to connect with other volunteers and become part of our growing community. No prior knowledge is needed. We’ll teach you everything you need to know.
For questions or if you'd like to join the volunteer team, please email Aaron at foodprograms@lspirg.org
